Bone One Volume Available Again
Hi All
Vijaya here – Just want to make a quick announcement – Cartoon Books will be re-releasing the Bone One Volume again! Below is the press release:
BONE ONE VOLUME EDITION – Available Again In September 2006
(Columbus, OH – June 27, 2006) This September will see the return of one of the most popular graphic novels of recent years, the BONE: One Volume Edition.
The massive five-pound, 1300 page paperback, by Jeff Smith, is being brought back by popular demand. The paperback tome, which originally retailed at $39.95 and has been out of print for more than a year, regularly sells for $100+ on e-bay.
The return was made possible by an arrangement between Cartoon Books and Scholastic/Graphix, the current publisher of BONE.
The original black & white BONE: One Volume Edition debuted at Comic-Con International in San Diego 2004 and sold 50,000 copies before being taken out of print the following year to make way for Scholastic's full color versions.
With the tremendous success of the full-color books (Graphix, Scholastic's Graphic Novel imprint has sold more than a million copies to date of the newly-colored BONE books), both Scholastic and Cartoon Books felt there was enough room on bookstore shelves for two versions.
David Saylor, Creative Director said, "In view of the historical significance of the black & white collections, we wanted to work with Jeff and Vijaya to bring the One Volume back."
The One Volume Edition has been named one of the ten greatest graphic novels of all time by TIME Magazine, Book of the Year by The Comics Journal, and earned a starred review in Publishers Weekly.
Vijaya Iyer, Co-founder and Publisher of Cartoon Books explained the indy company's motives, "We noticed that while BONE now has a significant presence in the children's section of bookstores, it was mostly absent in the adult graphic novel section. With the re-release of the One Volume Edition, we hope to fill that void."
Cartoonist Jeff Smith summed up his feelings this way: "I'm thrilled. The BONE: One Volume Edition is my baby, and I'm glad to have it back."

I have bought this first book when it has been release the first time and it had a very hot cover for this time, but now it looks again more awesome ! I practiced to draw the hands of your characters, so many times…they look smooth, natural, simple ! Bravo ! its a luck to have a blog from you with such good pictures you post regularly….bye

[...] Terrific news over on the Boneville blog – the enormous (1300 odd pages) Bone One Volume Edition is returning from out-of-print limbo this autumn. Jeff Smith’s masterpiece crops up on many critics’ lists of top graphic novels, while Time magazine selected it as one of their ten greatest graphic novels of all time. The Fantagraphics crew of the excellent The Comics Journal (TCJ as we usually refer to it – check out our continuing bonzer deal on TCJ subscriptions) named it as Book of the Year when it came out – and the TCJ folks know (and love) good comics work when they read it. This is a better cover than the first volume.
Bravo, Jeff! Can’t wait for the Color One Volume.
Comment by Adrian Bachnivsky — June 28, 2006 @ 9:11 pm
wwaa? storywise , is it any different from the colored scholastic bone 1?
Comment by mae — June 29, 2006 @ 2:07 am
No, the content is the same as the colored version, but some of us prefer black and white. And the new cover is great, it rocks my socks off, whatever that means. Who needs socks when you can have a brilliant new Bone cover. I hope this new one is included with “The Art of Bone” from Dark Horse, which I plan to buy if it becomes a reality.

This is fantastic news. I almost bought the out-of-print edition from amazon for $90, but someone had posted in the comments section that it is getting re-printed. Spread the news everyone.

I was JUST outbid on an Ebay auction for the old One Volume Edition when I saw this article! I’ve never been so happy to have been outbid before in my life.
That cover is BEAUTIFUL. To those who have suggested to turn into a poster, great idea! I’d hang that up in my room immediatley.
Oh man, I just wish it was going to be ready in time for summer instead of the school year. Oh, well – beggers can’t be choosers…
Comment by Matt — July 4, 2006 @ 2:10 pm
Oh, and just for the record and not for spam, I feel re-releasing the B&W is a good idea but albeit redundant and the impatient soul in me wishes the colored one volume was coming out next.
Simply impossibility, huh?
Comment by Matt — July 5, 2006 @ 12:47 am
I seriously cannot wait. Good work!
Comment by Tony Wilkey — July 6, 2006 @ 1:08 am
Wow……. uh, is there by any chance I could get that as a massive poster to put on my door. That cover is so inspiring :]
Comment by Victor Roa — July 10, 2006 @ 10:32 pm
Will this edition cost $40 also Jeff? Thanks!

The book will retail for 39.95 and will be identical to the original One Volume Edition with the execption of the cover.
Comment by vijaya — July 12, 2006 @ 11:28 am
oh… no special features of the reprint? Darn, that would’ve made me buy it
Comment by Tanner Hayes — July 12, 2006 @ 12:04 pm
Cosa?!?!
Finalmente verrà ristampata l’esauritissima Bone One Volume edition?
Questa volta non me la farò sfuggire, dovessi ordinarla adesso…
A presto, rattodonti!
…E Un saluto a tutti i Bone-maniaci!
Grazie Jeff, grazie Vijaya

Hi all;
1st post!
I just got through my first-ever reading of Bone on the weekend. Just to quickly comment on the new cover – it’s cool, but I don’t think I’d want to have that stupid, stupid rat creature on the spine baring its teeth at me from the bookshelf every time I walked past…
… oh yeah, I’m with Matt – bring on the One Volume Coloured edition!
Comment by Chris Kuan — July 16, 2006 @ 10:44 pm
vijaya can you please answer the question a few people have asked? Are they going to release a one volume color version or not?
I have the one volume hardcover and I don’t want to buy this one if there will be a color version of it out shortly.
Comment by Rudy — July 27, 2006 @ 9:20 pm
and by the way, thanks for the reprint…i’ve been selling the original on ebay for months and it will be nice to have a cheaper volume to sell!
Comment by Rudy — July 27, 2006 @ 9:22 pm
The edition we are releasing in September is the original b&w. Whether Bone is released as a one volume in color will be up to Scholastic Books. If they do make a one volume, the earliest it will be published is Autumn 2009.
Comment by vijaya — July 28, 2006 @ 11:21 am
I was buying the Scholastic books one by one as they came out, eagerly awaiting the next one. But now, if this One Volume is color, I’ll have to buy that. Great cover, would it be possible to include a tear-out fold-out poster of the cover in the One Volume Book?
Comment by Jeff S. — August 8, 2006 @ 4:04 pm
The one volume will be in b&w. However your poster idea is great! Too bad the books are already at the press…
Comment by vijaya — August 8, 2006 @ 4:10 pm

And to think i was gonna buy the old one vloume edition this morning. But really, i dont want to buy this either, i want the color one volume edition to come out!!!
Comment by Vegetokillsall — May 4, 2007 @ 7:12 pm
more bone more bone!!!
Comment by derrick — August 11, 2007 @ 9:59 am
Are there any plans to do a reprinting of the b&w volume 9 hardcover? I bought all of the hardcover volumes only to have the last book be some kind of comic Holy Grail. I’ve been thinking about buying the one volume edition, but the ODC in me has other ideas.
Comment by Matthew — December 23, 2007 @ 2:31 pm
Mathew,
When we agreed to go with Scholastic in late 2004, we agreed to take all Cartoon Books b&w collections out of print (except the One Volume Edition). That meant unlike all the previous collections, vol.9 Crown of Horns had only one printing.
Since we can’t go back to print, that means it is more rare than other CB b&w books.
I hope you find a copy. I only have a couple myself!
Comment by Jeff — December 23, 2007 @ 9:13 pm
