TINTIN and Herge Documentary

Filed under: News — Jeff @ 5:27 pm

If you are around a TV tonight, watch PBS for a documentary on TINTIN!   Tom Spurgeon over on The Comics Reporter pointed this out.  He also has some links to other TinTin sites. It runs tonight at 10 pm Eastern. TinTin is one of my favorite comics, and Herge is a master.  I'm looking forward to this!

  4. Whether you were a fan of Tintin is something I’d wondered while reading the beginning of the Bone saga (I’m a recent convert.) I saw this documentary a while ago and remember it being extremely interesting.

  5. I should also point out that local stations may run it at different times. Mine, for instance, in Columbus OH, shows it on Wednesday night (tonight). If you follow the links to the PBS site, you can check local listings via your zip code.

  6. I am a fairly recent convert to Herge. Charles Vess (the artist who painted the ROSE graphic novel) turned me on to TINTIN while we were on the Trilogy Tour together in 1997. But there is no doubt that Herge's working methods influenced the final act of BONE, when I decided to visit Kathmandu so I could research the city and customs first hand.  Kathmandu was the inspiration for the ancient city of Atheia where Thorn and Gran'ma Ben come from.

  7. Wow, I could totally see how you’d be influenced by him. His story is incredible. That documentary was incredible! I stumbled across it last night as it was just beginning. It really gave me insight into why I started making comic books. And seeing how the people in his life influenced the story and his creativity was so fascinating.

  8. Ahh, TinTin, which, while being one of the greatest comicbook characters ever is also one of THE most terrifyingly over-priced merchandise properties. In many years of looking I’ve yet to find a piece of “tat” that hasn’t made my jaw go slack when contemplating said purchase.

Guess there’s gonna be all the usual “TINTIN THE NAZI” baying on the show…

Jeff, long time fan, first time poster! My background is as a published kids author/illustrator and designer for animation (do please all check out my blog for comic/toon goodness!). I have to say you’ve been a big big influence and I shall definitely stay in touch on here. Likewise I’d welcome any irreverant comments on BADABLINGTHING from you guys if you’re up for it!

  9. I got a chance to see the show last night and it was definitely worth watching. I was familiar with most of the details, but was completely caught off guard by the depth of Herge’s sorrow – - especially when hearing it in his own voice. I always liked TinTin in Tibet the best of all the stories, but now it is clear that it was his masterpiece and a personal triumph. (If you haven’t seen the show yet, most PBS stations will re-run it in the next few days; POV: TinTin and I. Wait until you hear about the white dreams!)

No TinTin the Nazi. In fact, Herge’s time working for a Nazi controlled newspaper is put into context, and only adds to the tale of troubles Herge got himself into.

  10. Hey, Curtis,if you come back and read this, I wanted to leave a comment on your blog (which was very cool), but your log-in process was too clever for me.

  11. I didn’t have a chance to see the documentary… but they reply it on saturday :) I will whatch it with a lot of pleasure. Tintin is a great material, the belgium school are great. What is the more intresting with Herge is that he take a picture our our society at at very very intersting time : cold war, colonisation….. I really love Tintin, I got all of them in VO….. ahaha easy for me.. I French and Herge was speaking the same language (well almost the same). If you go to europe you can even visite “le Château de Moulinsart”.

  12. Jeff sir!

I can’t believe it’s too clever for ya ;-) I think there’s a number of ways you can post on there. You can either be a registered blogger (which is quite easy to do) or you can click on OTHER which gives you the option to put your name in then your webpage. That’s the one I’d suggest for you fella. And your comments are MOST welcome there!

“White dreams”?!?!?! Come on man, that just sounds plain rude!

I think we had maybe four books when we were kids, handed down from my cousins. Red Rackhams Treasure (if I recall the name correctly) the rocket to the moon, Tibet, and the one with the red lobster claw emblem (although my memory might well just have morphed seamlessly into Mignola’s Lobster Johnson mythos there!)

  14. Hi! I have spent 20 years in denmark and was a regular member of frederiksberg library and I have read and enjoyed all the tintin cartoon/ comic books but sadly saying that in my land no one knows about this character. Ah!!! I really miss my past spent with tintin readings.
