Frankfurt Book Fair

Filed under: Bone, World Tour — Jeff @ 7:50 am

I arrived in Frankfurt on Tuesday and was met by my German publisher Joachim Kaps of TokyoPop.  Joachim used to be my editor at Carlsen, when the black & white versions were being published there.  When he started up a German office for TokyoPop, I followed him over to his new company. That night I had a wonderful dinner of Pork and apple sauerkraut.

I almost thought I shouldn’t show this picture on my blog, because it might start to look like all I think about is food – - but well, there it is.

The next day was the opening of the Book Fair and the BONE exhibit.

It was also the first time I got to see the new TokyPop editions of BONE. They made two versions: one a manga sized black & white book. The other a larger full color one.  I think this was a bold move and I hope it works.  In the States, we have had two versions for a about a month now, and it seems the two books have completely different audiences.

The books are beautiful and the printing is very well done. I check the blacks to see if they are solid, and I'm satisfied. At the end of the day Joachim informs me that sales for the second volume of both versions is higher than the first. This is great news, since second volumes in Germany, like in the US, usually go down.

The Fair doesn’t open to the public until the weekend, so we were just going to have some Champaign and mingle around the exhibit. I had pictured something like a cocktail party, but as we got going, a small crowd gathered and Wolle, the Comics Pavillion organizer asked Joachim and I to hold an informal interview on the diaz.

We did our best and winged it. Afterward, we passed champaigne out to entire crowd and had our toast.

It was a very nice way to kick off the World Tour, and it was capped off by finding my old friend Chuck Rosanski, a legendary American comic shop retailer and collector, who was one of those responsible for setting up the Comics Pavillion about six years ago.

At 3:00 I headed out to the airport to catch a plane to Berlin for a store signing as well as a little site-seeing.  Then to Cologne, but I will be back to the Book Fair on Saturday and Sunday when it opens to the public. I've been told it gets a little crazy…

  8. Hi Jeff et all.

The BONE-exhibition at the Frankfur Book Fair was great. Usually I prefer dark & grim fantasy, but for me Bone proofs brilliantly: don’t trust your pejudices farer, than you can throw a piano.

For some reasons (which are too embarrassing geeky to tell) I’ve counted the panels of Bone. — BTW: I think, if you really want to analyse comics, you have to count. Or how do you think Scott McCloud got his schematics about differnent kinds of cultural styles regarding the transistion from panel to panel? Strangly, I find very little hard data about pages and panels. Oops, now I explicicated my geek-reasons. Sorry.
    But here are the numbers!

    ••• 1st Part: VENERAL EQUINOX
    • Book 1: »Out Of Boneville«; 142 pages, ca. 773 panels.
    • Book 2: »The Great Cow Race«; 143 p., ca. 630 pan.
    • Book 3: »Eyes Of The Storm«; 180 p., ca. 788 pan.
    ••• 2nd Part: SOLSTICE
    • Book 4: »The Dragonslayer«; 182 p., ca. 899 pan.
    • Book 5: »Rock Jaw«; 124 p, ca. 544 panels.
    • Book 6: »Old Man’s Cave«; 126 p, ca. 565 pan.
    ••• 3rd Part: HARVEST
    • Book 7: »Ghost Circles«; 158 p, ca. 673 pan.
    • Book 8: »Treasure Hunters«; 140 p, ca. 604 pan.
    • Book 9: »Crown Of Horns«; 229 p., ca. 984 pan.

Total: 1434 pages and circa 6460 panels. ›Circa‹, because I only counted once (took about 3 hours), and I guess, the total number might be wrong by plus/minus 10 to 20 panels. I only counted the storytellung parts, and not the vignetts.
    Cheers from Frankfurt/M, Germany,
    Alex / molosovsky

  9. Hi Jeff, on the last day of the year I finally managed to put the pics I took of the Bone exhibition at the Frankfurt Bookfair online. Not very spectacular, I know. But for anyone who’s interested, please click on the link above (to zoom in, click on the pictures). BTW: There is no way one could purchase one of those prints, is there? Have a great new year and see you in 2007! irene
