New Bone Plush Toy, Awards, and The Great Bone Re-Read!

Here it is, the first ever Bone plush toy.

Can you believe it? The stuffed Fone Bone stands 13" tall and should be available sometime in July. This is the proto-type, and we took pictures of it yesterday to get ready for the Previews catalog. I’ll have more information later when it we get closer to the order date.

AWARDS NEWS

We recently received e-mails from two of my overseas publishers with news about some comics awards:   Leftereis Staurianos,of Jemi, in Athens, writes to say:

Hello V,

Bone won the "Best Greek edition of foreign comic" award in the Comicdom con. We had to "fight" with Conan chronicles, Mafalda, Life and time of Scrooge McDuck, and Persepolis.

All my best

Lefteris

Below is a picture from the Greek leg of the World Tour.

Then we heard from Spain:

Hello Vijaya and Jeff,

Just a few words to let you know that BONE has been nominated as Best translated graphic novel for the awards of the forthcoming Barcelona Comics Festival!

Kind regards,

Laureano

Laureano Dominguez is from my Spanish publisher, Astiberri. I had a great time when I was there. I’ve got my fingers crossed, Laureano!

THE GREAT BONE RE-READ

And lastly for today, The Great Bone Re-read.   Blake Bell has an interesting website called Best Of Most Of where he talks about comics and pop culture.  On March 22, he proposed a Bone Re-read and he invites everyone to play at home. He seems to like the first three chapters so far.  We’ll drop in on him every now and then to check on his progress.

  1. Saaay, nice watch!
    And the doll’s pretty okay, too… ;)

Looks like a nice gift for my daughter. And I’ve actually started re-reading Bone. Man, those early chapters are so gosh darn beautiful.

    As always, best wishes,

    Scott

  2. Aaaah, such a cute Fone Bone! I want one! Do you have an estimate how much those will cost? Are you gonna do Phoney and Smiley as well? I want a plush little Phoney with a little t-shirt with a little star on it. Ahhhh, sooooo cute. And a Red Dragon. And a Bartleby.

  3. So cool! I would really like to see a Bartleby plushie. Him and Fone Bone are my favorite characters. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve re-read the series. Just looking at your drawings are very appealing plus all the characters are hilarious. I find huge inspiration in your books and my seven year old sister loves them. I would really like to meet you but I don’t live near any of your conventions this year. If you stopped making comics I don’t know what I’d do.

  4. I meant to comment on this way back when, but since you re-posted the pic I’ll comment now! I really like that Bone book from Spain. There’s something about the clean white aesthetic that really appeals to me.

  5. Such an adorable plushie. I want one rather badly. :)

I just finished re-reading Bone for the umpteenth time. It gets better and better with each reading.

  6. Haha, great plush! Seconded on the Bartleby plush, I’m sure this one will sell out everywhere!

Great news about Greece! Awesome to have gotten past Scrooge McDuck, he’s pretty big over there. Being Greek myself, I have family over there and visit frequently, ol’ Scrooge is still an icon after all these years.

More than that, it’s fantastic to hear that Bone is now a timeless classic all across the globe! Many kudos to you Jeff!

  7. Hi Jeff. Thanks so much for the plug of BestOfMostOf.com! We’ve returned the favour in today’s (Monday the 26th) installment.

We also conducted an interesting experiment this weekend. I sat down with my two 7 year-olds and read the first three chapters with them. Observations on the experience can be found here…

  9. Awsome plushie! what a swell idea. I have a quick question, do you think you will ever animate bone (if you havn’t already) because i think it would be a good idea. One reason i think people like Bone is because the dialouge (spelled wrong HA!) is so funny and witty. Animating the series will really bring the dialoge (how do you spell that!) to life. Hey if adding color to your comics made them so much better then why can’t animation. Just a thought.
P.S. how do you color your comics? i would really like to know. Thankies!

  28. Mr. Smith,

I just stumbled across your site, very well done. The plush Bone will be a perfect gift for my soon to be two year old son. I have only read 2.5 volumes of the Scholastic colored books. So far, I’m very impressed to say the least. I am envious of your talents (both writing & illustrating). Continued success on ALL fronts!

Please visit my art website and click on the ‘Ripley & Clint’ link to see my comic strip, at your convenience of course.

  29. Mr. Smith,

I Guess my website didn’t show up as I had thought.

    As before, at your convenience…

P.S. How long does it take for one of your books to be colored?

  30. Woo-Hoo! Plush Bone! I was just going to see if my mother-in-law could sew a plush fone bone, since I’m reading the books with my daughter (4). We’ll see what happens 1st – the toys available for sale, or my crafy mother-in-law.

I really enjoy the stories, and my daughter is proud that we finished the 1st book, and are now on chapter 3, book 2.

It’s a re-reading for me (thanks for the link to Blake Bell’s site) – I bought the colored books 1 & 2, then bought the big book that has ‘em all.

As for my 4.5 year old – some of the story is a bit scary for her, but the fun dialog between the two dumb rat-creatures makes them much less so. And it’s a great story – she will bust up laughing out loud at some section – like where Smiley says “I’m not Smiley, I’m a real cow! Moo!” Thanks for writing them.
