The Great Red Dragon and Kurt Cobain

Filed under: Bone — Jeff @ 12:05 pm

This picture of The Red Dragon and Kurt Cobain came from a website called Two-Timing My Scrapbook. It's one of the New York blogger's favorite images. Why? I have no idea… but I like the photo.

Meanwhile, I haven’t had much time to update the blog. I’ve been dealing with some rough deadlines for Bone 7: Ghost Circles (Scholastic), The Art of Bone (Dark Horse), The Complete Pogo (Fantagraphics), and of course, Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil #4 (DC).  All of these will show up in production journals soon (we have some new Monsters Eggs that we'll sprinkle about in the coming weeks!), but for now, let me point you to  Blake Bell’s Great Bone Re-Read. Today is the seventh entry, and he has just finished reading the first Bone trilogy.

Here’s a short excerpt:

“[the end of this] chapter ushers in a connection between the hooded menace and the bartender, Lucius. Meanwhile, Phoney Bone gets a leg up on his attempts to win his double-or-nuthin' bar bet, and Jeff closes Book Three with Gran'ma Ben pulling the troops outta the barn and heading off for safer ground. Jeff does a great job pacing the final chapter to leave you with the impression that nothing will be the same again, and that the series is about to explode. So, we're off for your Bone lovers til next Wednesday for the round-up of Book 4. See you then!”

With that one sentence about nothing being the same again, I feel sure that whether or not he ends up liking the story, Blake definitely gets it. Here are the previous entries: Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, and Part Six. Bell also talks about a lot of other very cool and interesting things on his site. Check it out!

  1. S’funny, I’ve been re-reading Bone myself these days (my original BW trades) and have been struck by how Jeff was able to plant “light-hearted menace” early on in the series (the Rat Creatures) which grew to a real palpable threat in the Hooded One. The end of the first collection when Phoney first encounters the Hooded One at the tavern still gives me chills!

  2. I’ve probably read the entire series 4 times. The great thing about re-reading it is that you get to notice all the little things that make up the whole. Happily, I find that Bone gets better with each reading.

  4. I don’t think there’s a week that goes by where I’m not diving back into the Bone saga, whether it’s for inspiration or just for the pure reading joy of it all.

And Jeff-thanks for the kind words regarding my take on Lucius:

“Walking on sunshine” as the old corny 80′s chestnut goes…

    Best,

  7. I’ve just started my own series on Bone over at my blog, aimed at trying to dig out some of the themes and mythic motifs:

  9. D.G.D. vs. Blake Bell! “Bone” essays vs. Bone entries! Catholics vs. Agnostics! Phoney vs. Lucius!

D.G.D., it’s double or nothing! If I win, you renounce God and your claim on Jeff’s house. If you lose, I get to keep Jeff’s house.

Jeff, where can we store the eggs and poultry and do you have some chalk so we can draw a line down the middle of your basement through the bar? :)

  10. Oh gosh….all the Bone love and I came here to post a comment on Shazam! LOL….Hey Jeff, just wanted to say I just finally read Shazam! # 2(thanks to the miracle of the Post Office and my local shop!) and it was fantastic! Mary is one of my favorite characters of all time and you’ve made her even better. Ok, I admit to liking the grown up “sexy” Mary but I can like both, right? Anyhow, I look forward to the next ish with as much anticipation as I do the next Buffy….and if you knew me, you’d know that’s the highest compliment I can give anything! Many blessings!

  11. I don’t think I can agree to the terms, Blake, though the house sounds nice.

What exactly are the rules to our competition?

  12. Ha, DGD! Whilst you’re still discussing rules, I’m beating you to the punch – or ownership of Jeff’s abode – by publishing Part 9 of my Great Bone Re-Read… ;)

The rules? Heads i win, tales you lose! It’s a Win/Win/Win for me, myself and I.

  13. Now wait just a minute, Blake. Did you draw out Smith’s use of imagery from “Sleeping Beauty”? Did you discuss the Hero Cycle? Did you describe the Animal Paramour mythic motif? Did you quote De Rougemont’s Love in the Western World? Did you compare Bone to King Kong? I gotta do research for these, man. Besides, that was, like, a fourteen-page essay. Let a body rest up a bit. ;)

  14. Hi, this is Mirka23, author of the blog Two-timing my Scrapbook. The reason I liked the photo so much is that I loved the mood that these two characters create together, and I was glad that I could capture it in a photo. There’s something about the Red Dragon – with his heavy-lidded, unhurried wisdom – that makes him a good spiritual companion for Kurt Cobain. At least Kurt as rendered in toy form. They look like they could conquer the world together, if they wanted to, but they’d rather just rock out.
