Drawing Board; Bone 6: Old Man’s Cave cover sketches

The process of making a new cover starts with a few loose sketches. Steve Hamaker suggested Fone Bone and Smiley sneaking up the rim of the ancient Rat Creature temple, and I thought the image was so strong, that I drew four different angles of just that one idea.

David Saylor, my editor at Scholastic, liked sketch C the best, but suggested making Fone and Smiley bigger, like they are in sketch D. The result is the new cover!

There you have it.
Bone 6: Old Man's Cave starts shipping to bookstores this week.

The drawing board is back! Yes!
Oh, i missed the drawing board section so much.
That’s wunderful!
Great sketches!

Love the rough sketches, Jeff! Behind-the-scenes stuff like that is my favourite. Such talent when you can draw just a little rough sketch and yet it conveys everything it needs to convey to imagine the cover layout. I pre-ordered Bone 6 so I can’t wait until it arrives!
Comment by Brandon — July 3, 2007 @ 12:38 pm
I like it a lot, but what is the big paw-like thing in the top-right corner? Is it part of the temple?
Comment by Zaphod Beeblebrox — July 3, 2007 @ 5:19 pm
yay I pre-ordered also! So if you get the books online too, it ships this week regardless? I know Barnes and Noble says August, Im just trying to get a definite idea about when its going to ship.
Comment by Marcus — July 3, 2007 @ 5:19 pm
You know, I actually can't give you a definite date because I'm not the publisher and bookstores are different than comic book shops (which is what I'm used to) – - all I know is that the publisher, Scholastic, told me that the books are shipping to bookstores now – - and some shops will begin putting them out on shelves right away. Has anyone seen a copy at their local Barnes & Noble or comic shop?
Comment by Jeff Smith — July 3, 2007 @ 8:29 pm
To Zaphod, its not a temple. It’s actually Rock Jaw’s paw kind of floating there with the rest of him not showing. (Oh my goodness a floating paw! lol)

I work at a Chapters store in Canada… we don’t have them in yet… I always pre-order the hardcover, because we don’t get the hardcovers as part of our regular stock. I usually get a shipment notification, and the book arrives a few days later… and then a few days after that, we usually get our paperbacks in-store, and I put them out on the shelf immediately. As far as bookstores go, there’s a few factors that go into it – I can tell you that Scholastic ships books DIRECTLY to our individual store – they do not go to our central warehouse first. This aspect will depend on what arrangement any particular bookstore chain has with the publisher. Next, it just depends on the individual store how fast they get them onto the shelves.
Comment by Brandon — July 4, 2007 @ 9:41 pm
Thanks, Brandon!
If you can, let us know when your notification arrives.
Comment by Jeff Smith — July 4, 2007 @ 9:44 pm
My local bookstore said the shipping has moved to August 1. What’s that all about? I though it was going to be early July.
Comment by Eric — July 4, 2007 @ 10:17 pm
Well, I haven’t received notification that my hardcover has shipped yet…
BUT, we did get our first shipment of 30 books yesterday here at the store – and I put them out this morning!
We have another 20 on order to start with, but I know they will sell pretty quickly.
The colouring is AMAZING! Steve gets better with every book, and this book is no exception. The books look incredible, let me tell you. Fantastic job all around! The filler pages I felt weren’t quite as cool this time… but they are appreciated! Of course, with the next 3 volumes, you certainly won’t need them

hey jeff will there be a one volume edition in color eventually?
thanks.,
Comment by joe — July 5, 2007 @ 3:37 pm
Good question Joe. I wanted to know the same thing! I’ll answer on Jeff’s behalf from an interview I did with him back in February:
“Yes — most likely a colour treasury of the volumes will be available through Scholastic but not until the colour is completed. That’s one of the things I am most looking forward to!”
I put down my website in the “website” field… I think it will be a link from my name. You can check out my article about Bone and interview with Jeff, and also an interview with Steve Hamaker, in the “media” section.

OK, last post from me… if you’re eager to have a bit of a further sneak peek at Bone 6 while you wait for it to show up at your local book or comic shop, I snapped a few quick photos of SOME of my favourite bits of colouring. Of course, they’re even more gorgeous when you can see them for yourself:

I just realized… Jeff, I suppose there’s a contractual reason that Boneville.com is not printed anywhere on the Scholastic books? They list their website on the books, naturally… I wonder how many new fans and younger fans are finding their way to your own most excellent site. I like some of the stuff they’ve done over at the Scholastic site (like the little Flash games – it’s fun throwing Snowballs at Rat Creatures!), but it doesn’t beat the original Boneville!

It’s actually not Rock Jaw’s paw… read Book 6 and find out!
(LOL I’m so sorry Jeff, I feel like I’m taking over your blog… Then again, a new Bone book being out merits much excitement!!)

I got Bone, Volume 6 yesterday in Peoria, Ill at Borders. The computer in the store said it wasn’t published yet, I went to the section it was in and found 6 of them!!
Comment by James — July 5, 2007 @ 8:34 pm
Ha Brandon’s right. My bad. Its part of “The omen” ohhh suspense!
Comment by Marcus — July 6, 2007 @ 12:49 am
I dont see why I didnt realize that sooner. Btw when I say omen I mean the forecoming of “The one who bears the star” hint hint nudge.
Comment by Marcus — July 6, 2007 @ 12:51 am
The bone one volume in color thing sounds neat. I think I remember asking the Boneville site about that they said it might be trilogies and not a whole volume. I think because of the quality of paper, since black and white doesnt need such heavy stock. If there is a bone ove in color though that’d blow my mind.
Comment by Marcus — July 6, 2007 @ 12:56 am
I know, I didn’t realize the “is it a paw? is it an omen?” thing for a while too LOL.
I would be completely happy with trilogy treasuries for the colour… and what you say about the paper thickness makes sense… it would be pretty killer though if they could do the whole One Volume in colour.
Comment by Brandon — July 6, 2007 @ 10:45 am
Well, good news all around! The Bone 6 books are in stores, or will be very, very soon. Thanks everyone for helping me keep track.
And yes, we will most likely present a trilogy of color books, rather than the single volume for the exact reasons that Marcus mentioned.
Comment by Jeff Smith — July 6, 2007 @ 2:57 pm
totally random question Jeff..what are the estimated ages of the bone crew, thorn, rose, etc?
Comment by joe — July 6, 2007 @ 5:32 pm
Thorn is probably around 15 or 16, Its a guess anyway.
The trilogy books sounds neat. Bet the cover ideas would be pretty cool.
Yay! Bone 6 is out!
Heres a nice hint for “the omen” thing. Get book one, check out chapter 6, and read pgs 124 and 125
Peace guys!
Comment by Marcus — July 6, 2007 @ 7:26 pm
I think the Bones are adults in much the same way Donald Duck is. He has a job and a house, but exact age is unknown. I think Thorn is also on the cusp of adulthood.
Comment by Jeff Smith — July 8, 2007 @ 11:44 am
Oh yeah, because the turning happens at a certain age right? Like on the very turn to adulthood. Although I never fully understood the turning, even in the black and white books.
Comment by Marcus — July 8, 2007 @ 1:25 pm
Turning into an adult. That’s all it is, metaphorically, but in the story, someone like Thorn, who is a Veni-yan-cari, gets special training early on to prepare them for their Dream skills.
Comment by Jeff Smith — July 9, 2007 @ 10:56 am
Oh, okay then. Yeha that makes sense. Thanks Jeff!

Woo Hoo! I just called and put a copy on hold at the neighborhood book store. The kids are jumping up and down! I’ve never seen them get ready to go anywhere this fast, ever. Thanks Jeff. We love Bone, and now all of the 8-year-old boys we know love Bone too! Happy day!
Comment by Meegan Blue — July 9, 2007 @ 4:58 pm
My hardcover arrived today!! Wow, the books look gorgeous all lined up on the shelf. Jeff, I’m wondering if you know anything about how sales of the paperback compare to sales of the hardcover. We don’t even carry the hardcovers at our store, for example. Kudos to Scholastic for choosing to publish the books both in soft and hardcover… after all, many worthy titles never even see a hardcover release. I’m just curious about the demographics of customers who may prefer hardcover to softcover.
Comment by Brandon — July 9, 2007 @ 7:57 pm
ahhh..so that’s why I saw so many hardcover editions at my local comic shoppe! I thought they were older editions or something. In retrospect, I probably would’ve bought the hardcovers so they’d last longer, but…
I always imagines Thorn as around 15-16, in medieval times that was plenty adult and usually women would be married around 14-15,right? I thought Fone would be the same age or maybe give or take a year? I think Smiley and Phoney would be alot older, like adult? I kinda get the feeling you’re not supposed to know their ages though. So you can relate to them regardless of the age of the reader?
Comment by Keiichi-chan — July 9, 2007 @ 10:02 pm
Yeah thats true. The thing with the hardcovers is great. I kind of like the hardcovers now, especially for this series. I had a set of soft covers but I had ordered a set of hc’s as a plus. And as goofy and redundant as that sounds it was actually because I had the soft covers for awhile (as they were coming out since 2005). So they were in good condition still and a friend of mine was inerested in the series nd I gave the sc’s to him he loves it now. THe hardcovers I still have and so Im just going to finish my collection like that.
Btw this sounds kind of off track, but on some of the panels on some of the books theres these odd colored rings mostly in heavily black ink areas, kind of like burn holes. Im not really sure what they’re for, although a friend of mine said it marks an original drawing.
Comment by Marcus — July 10, 2007 @ 10:45 am
Can you give an example of these rings, Marcus? Like, a specific volume and page #?
The same thing happened to me… I was buying the softcovers, found the hardcovers, and gave the softcovers to my brother to start him on the series.
Comment by Brandon — July 10, 2007 @ 10:50 am
Well its weird when I checked my softcover of lets say Eyes of the Storm is when I first noticed them. Pg 19 the fourth panel where thorn has her eyes closed after waking up from a dream and clocking her head. I checked out my hard cover and it had no rings. But in my book one sc it had none. And I checked my Hc, and it had I think 6 total on various pages. So Im not sure if its a marker, or maybe a misprint panel. They’re just kind of random. I’m not sure if its only some books that do this beacuse my book 2,3 and 5 were perfect. 3 had some weird red thread-lookin thing of colr tho across one of the light blue sound effects on chapter 3. So it could be maybe a misprinted page by accident. It doesnt necassarily mean I’ll go return my book for a new one. Thats kind of being a perfectionist.
Comment by Marcus — July 10, 2007 @ 11:33 am
Hmm… sounds strange man, I dunno. But I had some more problematic printing problems with a hardcover copy of book 3 at one point, where the ink was actually smudged on a bunch of pages. I kept getting bad ones – it must have been a bad batch that the retailer I ordered it from, at that time, only had books from that batch – so eventually I got Scholastic to send me a new one. They were really great about it, they didn’t ask me to send the bad one back to them, so I donated it to a school library through a Starbucks that was collecting books around Christmas.
Comment by Brandon — July 10, 2007 @ 8:42 pm
Thats neat! Well, I’ll keep em’. A book’s a book.
