Say Anything: “In Defense of the Genre” ships today

Filed under: News — Jeff @ 2:08 pm

The band Say Anything is releasing their new cd today, In Defense of the Genre.

It's a double cd with 27 songs and it's loaded with my cartoon art.  I did front and back covers as well a couple of drawings for the discs.

The group's website has lots of the album art including some flash and a Youtube video that shows an angry baby with a sword and an old geezer dressed like an extra from Mad Max dancing around. It's a lively website, you should check it out. The couple of songs I've heard are pretty good, too! Click here to read Time Out New York's review.

Steve Hamaker did the color (by accident, his name isn't on the cover, but it will be when they go back to press).

  1. Cool I’ll have to remember to check that out. Great art by the way it’s super cool!

    On another note
I just bought my first vol of Fight I decided to get the 4th vol cause it was the fastest lol. It was so great my favorite story was the “Forever Box”. I read through the entire vol over two days. Now I have to get more! I did read your piece in the 2nd? vol and it was really good, it reminded me a bit of The Little Prince. So I was wondering if you plan on submitting work to Flight again? I would love to see more or your work in the books.

  3. [...] Jeff Smith brings to our attention that the new double CD by New New Wave Rockers Say Anything was released yesterday.  Why, you ask ?  Well, since he did the cover art.  Which is quite awesome and new, albeit a bit menacing.  I only wish the music was just as impressive, and not the Joy Division meets Sisters Of Mercy rehash. 4. I was so pleasantly surprised when I saw the artwork a few weeks back to see that two of my favorite things had been combined. “You got Say Anything on my Jeff Smith.” “No, you got Jeff Smith on my Say Anything!”

They’re first studio album “…Is a Real Boy” is incredible, the best record I’ve heard in at least a decade, and I hope this one holds up as well.

P.S. I’ve already got my “In Defense of the Genre” tshirt complete with fat baby in diaper holding a sword!

How did you guys end up doing this though???

  5. Sony called one day and asked if I would be interested in doing the cover. Max Bemis, the band's singer/songwriter told me he has been reading Bone for years, and wanted me to draw it. I listened to the first album,"…is a Real Boy" and liked it, so I said yeah, let's make it.

  6. Jeff –

“…Is a Real Boy” is just tremendous, from my perspective. I’ve been told that “Woe” is my theme song, by some that know me well. If you want to listen to some of their earlier stuff I’ve got a copy of their first independent LP called “Baseball” (they encourage online trading of their material that can’t be bought in stores, such as this, so seriously just lemme know).

I just can’t get over how cool it is to see two of my favorite media and creators together!
