Happy Winter Solstice!

Filed under: Bone — Jeff @ 4:43 pm

Tomorrow, December 22nd, is the Winter Solstice – - the shortest, darkest day of the year, and the turning point at which the days will start to grow longer and longer – - the perfect time to light some lights and raise a glass.

Below is a story that first appeared in 1993. It was commissioned by a popular comics magazine of the time called Hero Illustrated and marked the first major exposure of BONE to the comic book reading public.  It's an oldie, but a goodie.

Here's wishing you and yours a very merry Christmas and a happy holiday season!

  1. I was glad to see this work its way into the narrative itself — it was the perfect way to bring closure to the stupid, stupid rat creatures.

Thanks for posting it! Merry Christmas!

  2. This was the story that got me into Bone, followed by picking up issue #13 I believe at the time. Hard to believe it’s been that long ago. My how time has flown by!

  3. Lol, the quiche, I remember reading this in Crown of Horns. Was this a part of the story, or did it kind of more or less fit in?

  4. I love this mini-story! The comic itself is cool too because it has a bunch of extras in it, including an extensive interview, early Thorn strips, a humourous copyright message and a “Christmas card”-like art page. You can still buy this back issue (”BONE HOLIDAY SPECIAL”) at http://www.milehighcomics.com!

  7. Funny to remember how my first exposure to Bone was via a Hero Illustrated issue while in college, around the same time (93-94). I can’t believe it’s been so long already (14 years?)…Yes, the Bones have been in my life for that much time. Happy solstice to you too, Jeff.

  8. i remember a lot of this comic from when it was printed in the Disney Adventures magazine. i was about 10 when i was getting it and the only thing i ever ended up reading in it was the bone pages, over and over and over again. imagine my surprise when, twelve years later, a roomate of mine walks in with the one volume edition saying “i just found this comic, check it out,” and hands me a copy of my long lost, beloved bone. well, under this year’s solstice tree i finally got together enough bookstore gift cards, and tomorrow morning i’m headed to buy the volume the moment the store opens. just wanted to say thank you for making something so classic and timeless that i loved it as a little kid and i love it now. i just hope i can write something half as decent.

  14. Mmm, now I’m hungry for quiche! Jeff, you should post Fone Bone’s, or maybe the Rat Creatures’, best quiche recipes so we can all enjoy!

By the way, according to Chapters Bone #7 is going to street on January 21st. They have a little interview posted with Jeff now too:

  16. Oh cool! That’s like the same day I got Rock Jaw last year from borders. Except now I’ve gotten it from Amazon.
Should be the same release date right?

    Comment by Marcus — January 2, 2008 @ 12:16 pm

  17. is January 21st the day it is shipped or is it the day people get it if they pre-ordered?

    Comment by Marcus — January 2, 2008 @ 6:46 pm

  18. hey jeff are u making a BONe 10 11 12 13 14 and more that would be awesome

    Comment by TJ — January 4, 2008 @ 10:17 am

  19. Yeah, that 21st date should be the same in the US as in Canada. Books don’t work the way that CDs and DVDs do where the stores receive them and put them out on a certain date. Basically, the 21st is an estimate. The publisher will hopefully start shipping the books to retailers a bit before the date they are aiming for, and retailers (and pre-orders) would hopefully get the books starting around that date. For books then to actually hit the shelves can also be another matter as discussion on the Flight Forums found with Kazu’s Amulet. Just because a store inventory says in-stock doesn’t mean the books are on the floor yet, they may be in the back room waiting to be shelved. If the computer says in-stock but the books aren’t on the shelf, hassle a sales associate to get the books from the backroom and put them on display!

TJ, Jeff has said that he doesn’t plan a sequel to the Bone story, and the 9 volumes of Bone definitely begin, contain and end the Bone story. He has said that there are more stories he could one day tell in the Bone world. (If you haven’t seen them, check out Rose and Stupid Stupid Rat Tails, two collaborative works that take place in the Bone world). However, any return to the Bone world wouldn’t be anytime soon, as Jeff’s current focus is his upcoming project, RASL.

  20. Well its kinda funny cause first i got intrested by the sound of it people loved bone so i decided to check it out. First i went to the library and got a book of BONE then i started to read it than i checked it out. It is wiered that a person like me checked out number 5 first than 2,3,4,6 and last but not least 1! In that EXACT same order! so 1 was last for me. and than My sister fell in love with Smiley bone, My friend fell in love with foney bone, and to admit it i kinda like like Fone bone :) :) :) :) .

  24. Heh, the comments are taking over this blog entry :) Any chance the Boneville forums will go up, Jeff? I was never here if/when they had life. It would be great to have Bone/Jeff Smith forums!

    Comment by Brandon — January 6, 2008 @ 1:11 am

  25. Yeah, the forums would be nice to get back up. We used to have a pretty active message board, but about a year ago there was a massive flood of porn spam that hit the forum. It was overwhelming. We couldn’t stop it no matter what we did, so it was better to shut it down.

Still, maybe it is time to try again.

    Comment by Jeff Smith — January 7, 2008 @ 7:32 am

  26. “Eat your Quiche,” indeed. Really charming stuff, Jeff.

Mmm. Forum. The forum would be good, but the spam is SUCH a pain. Maybe a couple of your fans could help you moderate?

Happy New Year. Looking forward to Ghost Circles…

    Comment by Og — January 7, 2008 @ 10:37 pm

  27. Yeah, what Og said! Also, I’m sure you’ve thought of this?, but one way to get around it is to require registration and also you can have one of those spam filter thingies that makes you type in a verification before registering, and then have an email bounceback to verify registration as well. It’s a bit more restricting if you wanted to have more of an open space where anyone can post without having to register, but I guess that’s the price to pay – and people could still drop in on the blogs and post a comment without registering. Anyway, it’d be cool if you’d consider putting the boards back up!

    Comment by Brandon — January 7, 2008 @ 11:35 pm

  28. What is a forum exactly, to just talk about the comic and stuff?

    Comment by Marcus — January 8, 2008 @ 1:06 am
