Sure, it was hard to maintain profitability as a self publisher back in the 80s & 90s, but I had a truly strange love affair with the "Schedule C", Profit or Loss from Business or Profession tax form.
Working that sucker for deductions (and keeping a tight ledger throughout the year) was akin to having a perennial government grant to self publish!

I enjoyed reading this blog. It's been extremely helpful and humbling to be aware of a lot of the downsides to self-publishing. As someone who is also looking to 'self-promote' his work, I have absolutely no clue as to how to go about it. I've been strongly encouraged and pressured to open a website and blog my work to get it 'out there.' But, I wanted to do my research thorougly and make sure I take the right steps. I had strong feelings that self publishing wouldn't make me a lot of money. Which is fine. My only true priority at the moment is to just print my work and get it seen by someone who would appreciate a nice story with nice artwork. I know how it feels to pick up a comic and be amazed by the story and the art. I want to do the same with my work hopefully.

No worries!

I wasn't around yet, of course, but there's enough info about those early underground days for anyone who wants to learn more about it.

Nope.

Raw was published between 1980 and 1991.

Zap was first published in 1968 by Charles Plymell and Don Donahue.

They weren't the first to sign on to publish Crumb's work. The first publisher ran off with Crumb's original art.

We could be here all night debating who gets credit for the first self published comic.
