Links Ahoy; January 2009

Preston is following me across the snow and ice covered yard to my studio. It’s another grey, frozen day here in the midwest. and you don’t want to go anywhere you don’t have to.
Here are some links to help ward off cabin fever…
Everyone knows I am fond of the art of Walt Kelly, the cartoonist of Pogo, but who were Mr. Kelly’s favorite cartoonists? Visit these sites and see why T.S. Sullivant and George Herriman were. If you’ve never seen Sullivant’s hippos before, you’re in for a treat. This guy can DRAW!
An interesting interview with Dave Gibbons, co-creator of Watchmen (one of the three books that inspired me to go into the comic book field along with Maus and The Dark Knight Returns). Dave can really draw, too. Have you seen his behind the scenes book Watching the Watchmen? In the interview Dave mentions reading BONE on his iPhone!
Another cartooning hero of mine: Hal Foster – - doing the original Tarzan comic strips! Man, this guy can draw, too!
Here is a two-fer link from The Comics Reporter that covers Neil Gaiman’s Newbery Award (which is a HUGE deal) for his latest novel The Graveyard Book, and announcement of my Toon Book Little Mouse Gets Ready.
And finally, check this out: I opened the paper yesterday to find the cartoon below by award winning editorial cartoonist Jeff Stahler, whose comic Moderately Confused is syndicated by NEA.
