RASL interview over at the Pulse

We’re very excited to announce that RASL volume one: The Drift is shipping this week!
To prepare for the release of the first RASL trade collection, Jeff gave an interview to Jennifer Contino over at the Pulse. You can read it here. It’s all about the inspirations for the characters and the wild science behind the story!

This is the oversized version that was originally intended for the serials, correct?

Q: I tell you, a friend just gave me Bone to read, and . . .
A: “Oh, Bone is great! Actually I was just re-reading that on my iPhone, ‘cos you can now download it from the iTunes store, which is quite a novel way to – er, yeah, I mean, Bone is an absolutely charming thing, and again it’s so well done in technical terms that it’s a seamless and very entertaining read, definitely.”

Dave Gibbons just called your work “seamless”. Thanks, David S

I want to support this series, but I’m past the point where I will buy a series with no clear end in sight that only comes out 3 times per year.
The solicitation for the 1st TP says it is #1 of 3. Since only the first three issues have been released (and they are probably the issues in the book), I think it’s safe to assume the story will run at least 9 issues. However, at the current rate, this story will take two more years to complete. I no longer want to purchase a rarely published series which may never be completed.
If the other two tps do come out, I will buy all three. If they don’t, I’m sorry I didn’t contribute to the possibility of them coming out by not supporting the indivuidual issues, but I think a 5 month wait between issues 3 and 4 is simply ridiculous from a consumer standpoint.
For the record, I bought all of the Bone series and Captain Marvel. I did buy the first three issues. As with the others, this is a good series. It’s just too bad about the gap between issues.

Pretty valid point, actually.
I think it actually is supposed to be a 9 issue limited series.
It is a signifigant amount of work, though.
Since its self-written,drawn, and researched.
But you make a good point. There are comics that get delayed also, (Ultimates comes to my mind first from Marvel and All-star Batman from DC).
Issue-gaps is a prime reason why people get the trades (and I admit, I get impatient at times), but yeah. Some like the paperbacks than single issues, so whatever floats your boat.

Well, waiting for the trades makes even more sense here as this trade has pages which were not included in the individual issues. If someone needs to buy the trade in order to get the whole story, there’s no motivation to buy the single issues. This book doesn’t simply have extras (like a DVD), it adds to the story. Even a few extra pages invalidates the original issues as the story presented in them is no longer complete.
As a result, I will be waiting for the trades with this series – even though I don’t usually do so with other titles I like. I generally buy the regular issues and the trades (or hardcovers) then give the original issues away.

There’s that too, and I agree partially with the thing about even a few pages adding to the story. Y’never know though, the issues could be worth more in the future.
But you make a respectable opinion.

Hi Betsy! Good to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words of encouragement. Yeah, I’m still drawing cartoons despite most of my art teachers trying to talk me out of it.
Good luck with grad school. Be sure you encourage those little cartoonists in your classroom!
best,
jeff

Hi Jeff.
I was just wodering if you knew in a “ballpark figure” sort-of way when RASL #4 might possibly be coming out. I surely would like to read it.
Best wishes from Texas!
