RASL Volume One: The Drift ships this week!

Filed under: News — Tom @ 3:43 pm

Happy New Year everybody!

RASL vol.one: The Drift hits store shelves on Wed. Jan.7! It’s big (9 "x 12"), and it has a new scene that was not in the original comic books.

I also wanted to let you know that there is a great interview about all the real and fringe science that appears in RASL over on the Pulse website and you can read it here.

  2. Haha I’ll second that, YES!!

This is awesome, I can’t wait! NEW STORY PAGES!! BIG SIZE!! Oh boy I’m excited!

  3. I’ve got no good feeling about this. Adding additional pages to the second edition of a comic? It’s not fair to those who just wanted to collect the normal issues of RASL. Don’t be cross with me, but this is my opinion.

    Comment by David — January 6, 2009 @ 12:08 pm

  4. I’m not cross with you, David. Your position is perfectly valid. The regular issues will still make sense, and you don’t have to buy the The Drift. It’s meant to be an extra for the book, like an expanded edition, but the regular comic story won’t be affected.

I hope you won’t be too cross with me! The scene in question is one I finished for issue #3 (inked and everything!), but before I went to press, I thought of something else I wanted to expand; that meant I had to cut something. A small 3 pg. scene that added to the story’s atmosphere but not so much to the plot was dropped. Now, with the trade, I can put it back in.

  5. Don’t worry. I think I will come to terms with this. :)

    Comment by David — January 6, 2009 @ 2:46 pm

  6. I liked Dave’s point actually.
It should be interesting though to see the extra 3 pages (bonus). Whether it be dialouge or just straight up action.

  7. Um, I have a question:
If we ordered the RASL book from another online store (I did from Borders). Do they get whatever order of however many RASL books from Cartoon Books first, and then they ship to the customers who ordered?

Because here RASL is shipping on the 7th, and then like, I guess if it takes 3-5 days for Borders to get the books, then like another 3 -5 days for THEM to ship. Then it should arrive anywhere from 6-10 days right?

Because they have it as “released on February 25th”, and its kind of been a really long wait already. So I’m just wondering if that’s how the system is working out. (I know it took a while before for them to get from Singapore to you guys since the economy is bonky). If you could respond, that would be reaaally good. Thanks in advance.

  8. I love RASL, I have a copy of this trade on hold at my local comic book store.

I’m not sure where to post this so I’ll ask here. I would love to know where I can find a list of all of Jeff’s works, including all special editions. For example the limited edition hard cover of Bone One Volume, are there more rare books like these?

  9. YESSS buying my copy right now. jeff smith rulezzz

  10. I need to pick up Rasl and read it. It sounds awesome.

I’ve attempted to do Bone justice in a collective comic review on my site. Hope you can check it out.

  11. I wasn’t sure where to leave this question as well…I’ve sent a few other messages and not heard back. Beavercreek Middle School’s would like to have Jeff come for an Author visit and wanted to know how to get in contact with someone about that? Please reply.

    Comment by D. Magnotta — January 8, 2009 @ 2:58 pm

  12. Jeff, I picked up the RASL trade, and it really is beautiful. The larger size showcases the lovely brushwork, especially in the desert sequences.

But I have a flip question to David’s. What is the benefit to picking up the individual issues? What material will be in the single issues that will not be reprinted in the trade? I guess my bottom line is that given how good RASL looks at the larger size (not to mention the additional pages), why should I purchase the floppies? I want to support this book, but I’m wary of buying the same material twice.

    I’m curious of your opinion.

    Regards,

    -Jeremy

  13. I have noticed that you can assemble the back covers of the individual RASL issues like a jigsaw puzzle. If you collect all nine(?) issues it should form one huge poster. Good excuse to buy the single issues. Anyone else put this together?

    Comment by Keath — January 9, 2009 @ 12:04 pm

  14. Yes, I noticed it too =D
There was the full image somewhere on the site a while back, I saved it. Looks awesome.

Btw Jeff (and not to sound like naggy) but about the release date question I posted, I kind of want to get a response.

  15. Is there anywhere that you
    can download the Bone font?

    Comment by TheAwesomer — January 10, 2009 @ 3:33 pm

  16. Hey jeff i think that the bone series would make a great movie. Just saying!

    Comment by Lando — January 12, 2009 @ 6:38 pm

  17. Jeremy, unless you’re a comic book collector (for example, me!) or you can’t wait for the trade (again, me!), I guess there isn’t much of a reason to buy the original comic book. Of course, it does support Jeff / Cartoon Books, which is a good reason for any fan. As a collector, I keep my original issues safely tucked away, while I keep trades on my shelf for casual reading or lending.

TheAwesomer, nope, I haven’t seen the Bone font(s) anywhere… Jeff drew them and so they’re his own font(s).

Annaka, it’s not a super-comprehensive list of Jeff’s work, but if you click “Bone” at the top of this website, then look at “The Books” section, you’ll get image galleries of many of the covers of Jeff’s work. There are the early trade collections that are now more rare, the later ones came in soft and hard cover versions and are suitably rare, the early ones are quite rare. Then there’s the Bone Reader which is somewhat rare, and the Thorn collection which is ultra, ultra, ULTRA rare :( Besides the stuff shown there, as far as books go, there are the original Rose issues, the Rose hardcover, the four original Shazam issues, the Shazam HC and soft (upcoming) trades, the Bone Christmas special, the Art of Bone, the three Bone mini comics that came with the action figures, the Bone And Beyond exhibit catalog, and the limited edition Before Bone exhibit catalog. Hmm, have I missed any? I would love to see this section of the site get an overhaul and an upgrade.

Got the trade sitting on my shelf now, waiting for a good opportunity to relive the first few issues! The oversized format is AWESOME!

    Comment by Brandon — January 12, 2009 @ 9:56 pm

  18. Hah, you got a point Brandon, I kept the issues sleeved and in a safe spot in my desk.

And then I ordered the trade (except I got it from Borders and according to them it releases February 25th and I SINCERELY hope its not that long.

I get what you mean though, since this is the first series I’ve ever collected I do comics for the value and just for that special kind of value they bring and what you see them as, and then the trade for reading the series and bonus stuff.

It seems redunandant, yeah, but its a personal preference I guess.

  19. I can’t wait to put this on my shelf!

  20. Heh sweet to see you here man, I can’t wait to put Amulet 2 on my shelf!!! ;) In terms of upcoming books, I gotta say I’m also pretty eager to put Scott Pilgrim 5 on my shelf.

  21. Hi Marcus
Borders now shows ‘RASL: The Drift’ as available for shipping. Hopefully you have your copy by now. We don’t have a lot of control as to when stores make books available – we sell to a distributor who then sells to retail stores.
    hope this helps!

  24. Hey Jeff and the Team!

I just Got RASL vol. 1 at my local comic shop (Tel-Aviv, Israel) and I was so excited!

I’ve been following your work for years now and I actually got emotional over the new book :)
Really, the beauty of the art took my breath away. There’s something about your line, your design sense and the beauty of it all that really gets me…
Plus, it’s a little bit of a naughty thrill to see a Jeff Smith stripper… It’s a little bit like seeing micky mouse curse ;-P

    Anyway, it’s wonderfull. Thank you.

  25. Hey, will we be getting previews of Crown of Horns? =D

    Comment by Marcus — January 16, 2009 @ 8:04 pm

  26. Heh, yeah, and also will Crown of Horns have any bonus material at the end? AND… LOL, now that we’re nearing the end, is there any word on a color one volume or something like a trilogy set?

    Comment by Brandon — January 16, 2009 @ 9:54 pm

  27. Actually there was a point (somewhere back in the blog comments)
That had to do with like, collecting Bone in to Color trilogies once the series was done being colored by Hamaker. (Had to do with paper weight and quality).

That would be nice though =p Bonus material

  28. Btw what will the cover of number 4 of RASL be like? On the back of issue 3 it shows him kind of holding his mask thing, but on this site it has something different:

    Comment by Marcus — January 18, 2009 @ 8:17 pm

  29. Also, is it possible RASL will be collected as a single hardcover/softcover book as a whole?

    Comment by Marcus — January 19, 2009 @ 10:36 pm

  30. Dear Mr. Smith,

Congratulations on “Bone Crown of Horns” I finished reading it this afternoon I thought you did a great job of rapping up the Bone series. You inspire me to write very much. I hope your doing well.

    Sincerely,
    William Faba

  31. Hey Tom, have you worked with Cartoon Books since Bone came out?

    Comment by Marcus — January 20, 2009 @ 11:24 pm

  32. *SPOILER*
I couldn’t find a forum for discussion of the comic books and I have this question that is not explained by the story.

why did the older headmaster tell Thorn not to seek for the crown?

    Comment by katherine — January 24, 2009 @ 11:58 am

  33. because tipping the balance is dangerous, you never know what will happen. plus, the penalty for trespassing is death.

    Comment by TheAwesomer — January 24, 2009 @ 6:18 pm

  34. The storytelling was very good and not very typical because of the slowness, which forces the reader to follow the pictures. One cannot just read it through. For this reason, I hope that this will be a long series because The Drift really seemed like only the prelude.

Even though the setting is scifi, there were clear rules which things are possible and which are not. The scifi stuff was always explained. Lets hope this is the way the story evolves so that all sudden “powers” or unexplained phenomenas are left out.

It would be if the story was not about saving the world in the end! :)

    Comment by Antti — January 28, 2009 @ 12:14 pm

  35. It would be “great”, I meant to say in the last post…

  36. I feel pretty darned gypped by not having those extra pages Jeff, I’ve gotta admit.

    Comment by John — January 29, 2009 @ 11:12 pm

  37. It was probably to keep the 32 pages of the comic consistent.

    Comment by Marcus — January 30, 2009 @ 8:55 pm

  38. RASL is great. Just curious, issue 4 comes out in March but will that be the end? I read somewhere this is just the first of 3 graphic novels/collections. Is this true? Thanks!

    Comment by Seth — February 5, 2009 @ 4:32 pm

  39. Hiya Seth. The 3 Graphic Novels/collections you speak of will each consist of 3 issues of the comic book. The Drift (that is out now) includes issues 1-3. The 4th issue that comes out in March will be in the second trade, along with issues 5 and 6. The third trade will include issues 7-9. Hope this helps.

    Comment by Tom — February 5, 2009 @ 4:56 pm

  40. 2 more years for the remaining 6 issues seems like a while. I gotta say though man, its a good story.

    Btw *spoiler alert*
The lizard faced man’s name is supposed to be revealed in issue 4. And I have a theory.
If there were only 2 people (one of them supposedly being dead) that RASL knew they knew the tech… and this assassin comes up some time later all werid looking, then I think. Could it be Miles from issue 3? Oh. and one question, in Issue 2 when RASL drove past some kind of place in his jeep after Annie was murdered, was that a Powerplant he drove by or The Compound?

    Comment by Marcus — February 5, 2009 @ 8:07 pm
