Well the day has finally arrived! The final color volume in the BONE saga is out in stores. It took Steve over 5 years to color all 9 volumes and he’s received two Eisner nominations. Here is a preview of the incredible work that Jeff and Steve have done.

  1. I’m getting this in the mail today!
MAN this last volume looks like its going to be epic!

    Steve Hamaker, is the bomb!

  2. A few words:
After 5 years, Steve Hamaker’s coloring on Crown of Horns was STUNNING. Every scene from page 1 to the sculpture was simply perfect. Awesome job.
    And:
RASL Vol. 1 was great also. I liked the transition pages and chapter names (which was a ncie touch). And the Tesla quote in the beginning. What was really appealing though was the oversized art. In the comics, its good. Blown up, it’s impressive how much detail you find. And I loved both of these books. So thank you Jeff Smith and Steve Hamaker for creating some awesome works of art.

    Can’t wait for RASL #4.

  3. I checked it out, my comic store got it in last week and it is great! Those hardcover full color versions really are amazing.

  4. Crown of Thorns looks great! My only objection is the ads for other books in the back. I realize its a perfect publicity vehicle, but its kind of a rude awakening after finishing up Bone.

  5. Congratulations to you both!

  6. OH man I can’t wait to pick up my copy it looks like the final one is well done.

    Comment by Jeremy Brubacher — January 22, 2009 @ 2:37 pm

  7. Oh boy, I can’t wait to get my copy now! This looks amazing! Of course, I didn’t expect anything less. Steve’s coloring has been nothing short of perfection and each volume has outdone the previous volumes, absolutely complimenting Jeff’s line art in every respect, no small or enviable task when Bone was a work of art in black and white in the first place. It’s hard to believe it’s been five years! I’m with Marcus on RASL trade #1, Jeff’s art too good to be confined by a small page, it absolutely needs to be seen large sized. So, maybe three oversized hardcovers collecting the entire Bone series in color? With bonus features?! (Original comic covers, covers from the different trades, extra strips like “Greed”, etc!)

  10. Great News!
And now taht the entire saga has been colored, when can we expect an “Absolute”-like series of the books to be published Jeff?
C’mon man, you know you wanna do it ;-)

  13. The ending still put a lump in my throat. I know why Fone Bone did what he had to do, but still…

I know it’s unlikely, but I hope one day to see the Bone cousins again. I wonder what they’re up to. Don’t you ever wonder the same thing Jeff?

  15. Why in the world did you stop writing Bone books the ending to the 9 th was great and all but you should be able to come up with plenty more like in the 10th you should show the town of Boneville and and have a problem go wrong in the desert and the guys have to go back and another big problem comes up.

  17. These color volumes have been terrific. Thank you Mr. Smith for giving us this treat.

    Comment by Dave — January 25, 2009 @ 10:07 pm

  18. Carl, to give my thoughts on your question, Bone was somewhat planned out like an epic story such as Lord of the Rings. While there are other J.R.R. Tolkien books, none of them are on the scale of Lord of the Rings. Can you imagine if, at the end of Lord of the Rings, Frodo suddenly started a new adventure? It would make the ending less satisfying, the “happily ever after” feeling at the end of a grand story. That kind of continuing storytelling works in episodic narratives, but not necessarily in epic narratives. Jeff set out to tell a story, beginning, middle and end, and he’s told it… I’m not sure continuing that same story would work. On the other hand, Jeff has told a couple more stories in the Bone world – if you haven’t already, check out Rose and Stupid, Stupid Rat Tails. I’m sure all of us would love to see other stories told in the Bone world.

  19. Jeff, Vijaya and Steve,
Congratulations on finishing up the series at Scholastic! I can’t believe after all these years it’s done. Know this, your work has changed the landscape of graphic work in children’s literature for the best while making so many more readers happy by being exposed to this fabulous world.
    Big hug!

  36. Ok, i love bone. i really think if you made a TV show about the bone series (1-9) and continuing, it would be one of the best Cartoons of all time to be showed on TV, and would have alot of veiwers.

It would be really interesting to see what happened after the war
