Links Ahoy; January 2009

Preston is following me across the snow and ice covered yard to my studio. It’s another grey, frozen day here in the midwest. and you don’t want to go anywhere you don’t have to.
Here are some links to help ward off cabin fever…
Everyone knows I am fond of the art of Walt Kelly, the cartoonist of Pogo, but who were Mr. Kelly’s favorite cartoonists? Visit these sites and see why T.S. Sullivant and George Herriman were. If you’ve never seen Sullivant’s hippos before, you’re in for a treat. This guy can DRAW!
An interesting interview with Dave Gibbons, co-creator of Watchmen (one of the three books that inspired me to go into the comic book field along with Maus and The Dark Knight Returns). Dave can really draw, too. Have you seen his behind the scenes book Watching the Watchmen? In the interview Dave mentions reading BONE on his iPhone!
Another cartooning hero of mine: Hal Foster – - doing the original Tarzan comic strips! Man, this guy can draw, too!
Here is a two-fer link from The Comics Reporter that covers Neil Gaiman’s Newbery Award (which is a HUGE deal) for his latest novel The Graveyard Book, and announcement of my Toon Book Little Mouse Gets Ready.
And finally, check this out: I opened the paper yesterday to find the cartoon below by award winning editorial cartoonist Jeff Stahler, whose comic Moderately Confused is syndicated by NEA.

Great links Jeff. Can’t wait to add that Little Mouse book to my collection. Going from Bone to RASL to mice… that’s the kind of versatility I admire on an artist.
Another artist you may find interesting if you don’t already know about him is Charles Thorson. Walt Kelly cited him as an influence, and I think he did so for a lot of other comic/animation artists at the time. Here are some samples: http://ow.ly/7S4

That Sullivant guy is awesome! I bet he could do some pretty great political cartoons.
Theres a black and white graphic novel called Iron West which is really good.
And a manga-type series (which actually reads like a regular book and has un-typical art style) called Blade of the Immortal. The guy who draws it does realistic pencils that make for a real eye catching visual.

Brrrrr! It’s WAY to cold up there, though I miss the look of winter with the snow dusting the bare branches like that.
Hal Foster is one of my favorites too. I used to illustrate my own “Price Valiant” pages when I was a kid-even ran across one of them not long ago!
I can’t wait for “Little Mouse” to hit the shelves. Here I’ve been trying to get a childrens book published for how long?? And you just do one in between projects! Argh! Well, that’s a big ol’ boot in my ass.
I’ll be working all weekend, so give a call if you’re inking-
Jen

Wow, one of the old cartoonists makes me think of Gary Larson! I think I might have found one of HIS influences!
VERY Far-Sideish…like the ostrich ‘accidentally’ swallowing her cup and the Cerberus in Hell (we all know how many of those jokes Larson has made).
