Happy Fourth of July!

Hope you’re going to be at a cookout this weekend! I will be.

I can’t believe it’s summer already. I think this must have been one of the busiest Springs I ever had. I drew more comics than I have in years, been involved in a lot of projects, and traveled all over the country. I gave a commencement address and read scripts for the Bone movie. I also read a ton of great comics. I’m going to start blogging about them in the coming weeks.

It’s old news, I know, but next week, I’ll start an On the Road 2009 blog to recap the places and awesome cartoonists that I’ve met and hung out with over the last few months. The photos I have of Craig Thompson flipping through portfolios full of original art for his next project Habibi are worth it alone!

One last thing, I received my copies of RASL no.5 from the printer, so that means they will be in stores on Wed. July 15.

Tom and I will put a preview of the issue on Monday.

Enjoy the long weekend!

  2. Oh man that burger looks good!! Can’t wait for RASL #5, and wish all you US folk a great long weekend! We had our July 1st Canada Day stat in the middle of the week this year, which was kind of weird!

  4. Awesome. I am excited for the new Rasl. It seems that day will be an even better day for comics than it already is. Whoo-hoo! I also cannot wait to get my limited hardcover Rasl trade.

So Jeff, how are those Bone scripts coming? How many of them are trying to turn Bone into trash and how many are worth a darn? =)

  5. Exactly what Will said (and asked).

  6. More details about the Bone movie! Let’s have them!!

    RASL hardcover…. drool…. can’t wait!!

Yup, I hail from the great white north, otherwise known as rainy Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. (I actually live just 10 minutes out of Vancouver, in the smaller city of Richmond.) But we are having a pretty sunny summer so far.

There’s a lot of great things about living up here – I was an extra with a close-up in the very last shot of an episode of The X-Files when I was 10 or something, LOL – but we don’t get any big cons up here, so thus far I have sadly not made it out to the big SDCC yet, where all of my comic-making heroes (not to mention all the TV and movie stuff) are every year! Jeff, Steve Hamaker and the entire Cartoon crew of course, Kazu and the flight crew, Mike Mignola, David Petersen, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Telltale Games (Steve Purcell), Terry Moore… all right, that’s it, I’m starting to save now so that I can go next year!

Hey, is there anyone out there who IS going to SDCC this year and would be willing to look out for some sketchbooks for me? I don’t know who all is going to have sketchbooks yet this year, but I would very much appreciate it if someone could take my little list, have a look, and I would be able to pay via PayPal for goods and shipping. Hope it’s OK to ask this on your blog, Jeff.

  8. Great to hear you’ve been drawing more comics than you have in years, Jeff! The world can always do with more comics!

Craig Thompson’s next book looks beautiful; I’m really looking forward to it.

  9. Aww yeah that hardcover will be sick.

Canada was really nice when I visited 2 years ago, I believe it was Ontario when I came with my folks and sis. It’s like the cleaner, friendlier version of Chicago =p
Believe it or not, the people were so nice that even when they cut you off in traffic they smile and say thank you, I kid you not that happened. LOL

Btw do you read Marvel stuff?
Stuart Immonen was a really good artist on Ultimate Spider-Man (he was Canadian).

  10. I can’t wait to hear more about the movie! I know it’s been a long time coming and I trust that you’ll choose the right people for the job. Best of luck!

Wish I could join my sister at comi-con this year but maybe better planing will bring me there next year. But speaking or comics.. any chance you and Mr. Vess would do another Rose story? I would love to hear more about the old kingdom.

Enjoy your fourth of July weekend. I’ll be at an annunal party at my aunt’s. Not quite outdoor cooking but it’s close enough. :)

(Canada, it’s been awhile but I’d like to visit again someday. Family only got to see the Thunder Bay area)

  13. Lol most generic movie trailer voice-over:
    “IN A WORLD…”

    “COMING THIS SUMMER…”

  14. Oddly enough I haven’t been to the east coast of Canada but I hope to one day.

I read Nextwave, which Immonen did, which was fantastic. It was written by Warren Ellis, and it’s HILARIOUS. I highly recommend it.

As for Marvel I have read and loved Astonishing X-Men, the first 24 issues + giant-size (which is 2 hardcovers and will be re-packaged as an upcoming omnibus) while it was Whedon and Cassaday, and Runaways, the first three hardcovers while it was Vaughan and Alphona. I recommend both of these series to anyone. Besides the wonderful stories and art, a bit of a side note, Marvel’s hardcovers are way better made than DC’s, I’ve always seen crappy binding with DC’s and returned some of their books for that reason, except for Jeff’s Shazam!, and except for their Absolute editions, which are absolutely awesome. As a “rule” though, I don’t read a lot of Marvel or DC, but really it’s not so much whether it’s Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, small publisher, independent or what-have-you, it’s whether the story and art is good or not. So I’ll read most anything that’s GOOD, and I rely on others to recommend books to me!

Alright enough from me I don’t mean to take over Jeff’s blog! Um, hey everyone, let’s talk about Bone!

I love Jeanette’s idea for another Rose story in the Old Kingdom. Except that I’d like Jeff to draw it, as much as I love Vess’ art :)

    Comment by Brandon Klassen — July 5, 2009 @ 6:29 pm

  15. Another Rose story would be great! (Maybe even as like: Tales From Atheia?

Honestly when I saw Rose the first time, I seriously thought it was Jeff Smith’s linework and Charles Vess’s painting. His art is stunning.

I agree with the whole thing of “Not for the company, but for the story/art/joy”.
