New BONE books; BONE: Tall Tales & Quest for the Spark

Filed under: Bone — Jeff @ 12:38 pm

Last night I announced two new BONE projects; BONE: Tall Tales and BONE: Quest for the Spark.

Tall Tales, pictured above, is a major repackaging of a book I did with Tom Sniegoski a few years ago called Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails. This new book, which takes place after the Bones have returned to Boneville, revolves around Smiley and Bartleby telling tales around a campfire to a group of young Bone Scouts (their names are Ringo, Bingo, & Todd!).

One of the tales will be the long out of print story I did for Disney Adventures that was not in the BONE books, and will now be returned to the BONE cannon with a beautiful coloring job by Steve Hamaker. Another will be the The Adventures of Big Johnson Bone, Frontier Hero, which appeared in black & white as Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails. Tom Sniegoski, who wrote SSRT, has written two new Johnson Bone stories, both of which are pretty incredible. All now in glorious Hamaker colors! I will be writing all the new Smiley and Bartleby stuff.

BONE: Quest for the Spark is a slightly different kind of thing. It is not a comic; it’s a novel. A series of three novels written by Tom Sniegoski that follow a new generation of Bone characters into the Valley.

I was a bit unsure about this project when Tom first suggested it, but when I read the first book I laughed so hard, I agreed to do it. Scholastic was so blown away by it, that they decided to make it available in hardcover and wanted the illustrations, of which I think I’m going to do about twenty, full bleed and in color.

While not an official sequel to my comic, it will be fun to see some the characters again, like the stupid rat creatures, and Roderick the racoon.

BONE: Tall Tales is scheduled for Summer of 2010, and BONE: Quest for the Spark volume one, is set for 2011.

  1. Heh, that sounds awesome Jeff! Thanks for all the details! I love the first picture at the campfire! I’m really excited that, as I guessed (I was composing a post on the last blog while you were posting these new details), Powers That Be is going to see print, newly colored!

  3. Very excited for the Tall Tales! I attribute Disney Adventures to helping me discover Bone in the first place.

As for Quest for the Spark, if you enjoyed it, I’m sure we all will, too.

  6. Wow! I’m so glad to hear about these new books Jeff! I’m having the worst day and you really turned things around.

I was going to buy Stupid Rat Tails but I think I might hold out for this new book.

As for the novel, I know a continuation is sort of taboo when it comes to amazing stand alone stories like Bone. But I really like the idea of different Bones visiting the valley. I also love the idea of them traveling in a balloon (balloons in Bone have never been a bad choice.)

And a written novel series? That sounds really interesting.

  13. This is really the best news of Comic-con for me! The Quest For The Spark Trilogy looks like it will be an amazing read. I mean Skyships and Rat Monsters? Now theres a marraige made in heaven! I’m also thrilled about Tall Tales. Between these and Rasl continuing to be one of the best books on the shelf at the moment it makes me proud to be a fan of Jeffs!

  14. The cover rough of Quest for the Spark is made of awesome…a female Bone?! And a Professor Bone?!? Really?!?!

Tom Sniegoski’s writing on the “Big Johnson Bone” story made me laugh out loud more than once reading it, and I’m as excited as all get out to see the new version with the wonderful additions of the storytelling sequences. -River :)

    Comment by River — August 9, 2009 @ 4:36 pm

  41. LOL new books not even out yet and already asking for a sequel :) But personally I think that’s a great idea. Smiley Bone and Bartleby are a fantastic duo. There are so many opportunities for fun with those two. We could also have some adventures with Phoney in which he is cooking up money-making scheme after money-making scheme, all of which naturally go awry :) I think stories like that would make a great return of the Bone characters to their original format of black and white issues, a series such as “Adventures from Boneville” or something like that (it wouldn’t actually take place in Boneville, that’d just be the name because the main characters are the Bones, and they’re from Boneville). Jeff could write and draw the series between his other projects, and release as special issues or annuals maybe every few months or so, and do a series of them. I’m not sure what kind of stories might be told with Fone Bone… but inevitably they’d likely tie in with Thorn, and we’d definitely need some stories with her in her new role. Well, I can dream up various Bone products, books and story ideas all day :) That was my thought for today, prompted by River’s awesome idea! Sigh… it’s definitely time to pull out the One Volume again!

    Comment by trevor — August 23, 2009 @ 11:42 am

  47. Hey Trevor… I don’t think we know much about the Bone movie yet. There was something brief about it a while ago now, but I’ve forgotten. And as per this blog entry, yes, there are more Bone books on the way! In the form of 1) a major repackaging of Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails and 2) a series of new prose books by Tom S. with illustrations by Jeff.

This made me think of a feature that Boneville.com should have… a “What’s New” or “New & Upcoming” summary available from the top menu that would simply list the latest news on any given topic, for anyone who needs a quick recap. It would be updated whenever something occurs or is announced. For example, “It’s way too long to wait until Summer 2010 for Tall Tales!” “RASL… issue #6 coming out such-and-such a date!” “Little Mouse Gets Ready… now available! (link to store)” “Shazam!… where have you been all this time? Buy it now! (link to store)” “Bone Archive Edition & Trilogy Color Editions… Brandon’s still dreaming about them but we’re not going to make them!”

  57. Hi Jeff, I don’t know if you will read this, but I still gotta say this…

Ever since I’ve read Bone, I’ve been hooked. Checking up on this website almost daily, anxiously awaiting more information. It probably won’t surprise you that when I read this information for the first time, I was so happy and excited! Smiley and Bartleby! And new Bones! This is just so awesome!

Also, about Fone leaving Thorn: made me cry the first time, yes, but in the end, familial love is stronger than romantic love. ;) (and besides, after reading a rather… shall we say unique fan-written story, I’m happy with the decision you made. But I’d have liked it either way.)

Seriously, Bone is the best comic I’ve ever read.

    Comment by Vianerd — December 4, 2009 @ 1:55 pm

  58. The bone comics are my favorite comic book series ever!!! I’ve never really been into comics until my mom’s friend introduced me to the bone series. At first, I wasn’t so sure if I’d like them or not. But then I started reading the series, and I absolutely loved it! After I’d finish one book, I’d quickly move onto the next book until I finished all if the books that were relesed. Waiting for book 8 (Treasure Hunters) and book 9 (crown of horns) was very hard. At first I didn’t know that Jeff Smith came out with a 9th book until I was walking through Barnes & Nobles. As soon as I saw it I bought it. I’ve just finished book 9 (crown if horns) and it was awesome!!!! The ending seemed like it could be the ending of the whole series, (I hope not!!!) but it also seems like there could be another sequel. I’m confused. Is there a squeal to the ninth book?????

  107. Hey I just read the 1-9 series of the bone books and it’s sad that it had to end but after these next couple of books about them back in boneville there should be a few more about them going back to the valley and seeing how thorn and all of there old friends are and maybe another conflict may come up while there. I can’t wait to see if there will be more to it!
