First Look: Massive Bone 20th Anniversary Color One Volume Editions (we’re planting a tree for every one we sell!)
Before we start, I want to say that this has been one of the most complicated, difficult, and exciting projects I’ve ever worked on. And one of the things I most want for myself!
At last! For the past five years, the single most requested item at Cartoon Books has been a single volume of BONE in color. Now, to celebrate two decades since the publication of BONE #1, Cartoon Books is pleased to announce a full color One Volume Edition of BONE in a collector’s box and a deluxe slipcase version! There will also be a very limited edition that contains original art by me and Steve!

Wow, I want the deluxe set for the pewter figures alone. That looks pretty sweet.

While I’m a sucker for slipcase hardcovers, I think I’ll go with the collector’s box set, as that hardcover seems to match the hardcover One Volume Limited Edition I have on my shelf.
Pricey? Heck yes. But totally awesome.
Comment by VS Romero — March 2, 2011 @ 1:16 pm
The collector’s box set looks wonderful. So due to the limited number, and being available first at San Diego and also through Previews, will it also be for sale on the website after the comic con?
Comment by Johnathan — March 2, 2011 @ 1:29 pm
Oh wow wow wow!!!
Now the only decision… which one to get! The original art by Jeff and Steve is so amazing, but eek! $1000… that’s $650 for the original art… Probably going to have to go with just the Collector’s Box Set then
Comment by Brandon — March 2, 2011 @ 1:38 pm
dang it. won’t be released in time for any con. My daughter will be so bummed to get the slip case but not signed…RATS!
Guess she’ll have to bring a soft cover.

Oooh! I want one! But sadly it’sa bit much to spend. I would really love those pewter figures. Well they eventually be sold individually from the collector’s set?
Comment by Jeanette — March 2, 2011 @ 5:49 pm
Honestly, I’m pretty excited for the essay. It will be really cool to hear what Jeff has to say in his own words as he looks back over 20 years and hopefully talks about the beginning of Bone and the trials and ultimate success of self-publishing, the colorization of Bone and his feelings on how the color and black and white versions are both true expressions of his vision, and the whole journey in between
I think the gold coin is the best choice for something from the world of Bone to exist in real life, and the pewter statues are very cool.
Comment by Brandon — March 2, 2011 @ 6:56 pm
Of course I’ll be getting this, I’ll have to settle for the $350 one though.
My only gripe is that its only 9 1/2″ × 7″… come on, this deserved the “absolute” treatment of 15 3/4″ × 9″
Comment by RawShark — March 2, 2011 @ 7:21 pm
I missed out on the original hardcover from a few years ago, so I hope you keep the “normal” $150 slipcased hardcover in print forever! (or until the next anniversary!)
Comment by Torsten Adair — March 2, 2011 @ 8:19 pm
I would love any of these but sadly, they are all out of my price range so I will have to stick with my falling apart one volume paperback.
Comment by Bluus — March 2, 2011 @ 11:25 pm

Wow! Sold on that collectors boxed set and thanks for giving us the time needed to save up the bucks! I can’t wait — I’ve been wanting a One Volume in Color for YEARS! And has it really been 20 years? I remember when Bone #1 came out!

Comment by Christine — March 4, 2011 @ 4:25 pm
My god, I simply must own one of those collector’s editions! I don’t live in America, though, so am I able to get my comic supplier to pre-order one for me, or is this a website/comic-con only thing?
I didn’t know if the Diamond item code was for only the colour hardback, or for all editions.
Comment by Alex — March 5, 2011 @ 12:50 am
These collections will become gems.
Comment by Marcus — March 5, 2011 @ 1:59 am
Will this be available on Amazon.com?
I like the fifty copy box set, but it’s way out of my price range. Sad, since it’s not going to become any cheaper after it becomes sold out. Gonna have to go with the collector’s box set.

Thank you very much guys !!

Damn, this will be the fifth time I buy the Bone story.
- comics
- HC trade b/w
- SC trade color
- HC trade color in Dutch
- one volume ed. Color (already pre-ordered)
@Jeff
The original art is nice. But why not adding it at random in the “normal” collectors edition ?
That way everyone gets a chance to find a orignal piece. Instead of creating a lot of more-or-less pissed fans now. Because they just can’t afford a $1000 book, no matter how much time you give them to save.
But I’ve been with bone for 19 years. And enjoyed every minute of it. I never regreted, picking up that first issue (#7 for me) of bone. And since then I enjoyed most of your work. And hope you’ll continue making great stories.

Quick couple of queries – it looks like the cover of the book itself is different in the boxset version and the slipcase version, are the pictures accurate? Also I assume no slipcase is included in the boxset version?
Also is the cover gallery that is included in the slipcase version but in the boxset version it’s included as it’s own book (complete with the Cartoonist DVD)? Is the boxset cover book a hardcover? Are more covers included in the boxset version over the slipcase version?
Comment by Paul Dawson — March 10, 2011 @ 5:39 pm
All your observations are correct. The picture is a mock up, but is pretty accurate. The cover gallery in the slip case includes all the first run covers of the comic books #1 -#55, and as you guessed, the gallery in the box set is more detailed (mostly because we had more room), and includes trade paperback covers.
Comment by Jeff — March 11, 2011 @ 7:42 am
Good to know – I’ll be picking up the boxset version then I think!
Comment by Paul Dawson — March 13, 2011 @ 10:53 am
Coming up on the big four-oh in July. Wifey has been asking what I’d like: vintage drum kit? Monster seats at Fenway? A cintiq?
I think an original piece by Jeff and Steve would top all of that! All over that collector’s edition-pleasebeavailablepleasebeavailable!!

Comment by Andrew — April 2, 2011 @ 2:00 am
Dear Jeff Smith,
I like your BONE comics a lot. It is funny, thrilling and surprising.
It is very hard for me to wait for the next book.
Can I ask that the movie “BONE” will soon be available here in Israel? I am waiting for the movie for a long time and it’s really hard for me to wait.
Best regards,
The #1 Israelie fun of your work, Yehonatan.

I want this book but in the same size that RASL has been republished in. The “Absolute” size would be perfect for his art! I wonder if they are going to produce a larger book. Plus, the price is just too steep for something I have already bought twice!
Comment by Melvin — April 20, 2011 @ 11:11 am
Will I be able to buy the $150 edition in Barnes & Noble?
I already have the black and white one volume edition, but I’m afraid to even read it outside my room, so a hardcover would be awesome, especially is it’s fully coloured!
