RASL to be part of Best American Comics 2011

I’m very pleased to announce that RASL will be included in the 2011 edition of Best American Comics.

This year’s editor,  Alison Bechdel, chose RASL #6 The Mad Scientist to be in the 2011 line up. That’s the Nikola Tesla issue.  Best American Comics anthologies are always filled with good reads, and it’s an honor to have work included.

I am especially happy because I am a huge fan of Alison and her graphic novel, Fun Home. Thanks, Alison! Big thanks also to regular series editors Jessica Able and Matt Madden. Besides being well respected cartoonists themselves, Jessica & Matt also run the website Drawing Words & Writing Pictures. RASL was named a notable last year, and you can see Jessica & Matt’s write up here.

I do not know yet who the other cartoonists in the book will be, but a review from Publisher’s Weekly that appears on Amazon also mentions Joe Sacco and Dash Shaw.

I really like the cover designed by Jillian Tamaki

Below are a few images from RASL #6, The Mad Scientist:

  2. That is an honor to be sure. I’ve enjoyed any of the America’s Best Comics series that I’ve read. I agree about the cover.

  3. Hello,

I’ve seen that you are a great illustrator. I don’t know if you are interested in publishing comics or if you are already doing so, but if you want, now we can offer you a great way to do so. It is Comics Fever (www.comicsfever.com). It is a platform where you can publish your comics, using our website. Then, an automated system distributes your comics in different digital distribution platforms (iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone), and obviously, you get your share of all transactions (20%!).

We are more than 300 registered artists.

If you are interested, please check out our website, and register to the beta program. During the next month the platform will be available completely, and if you have any doubt, don’t hesitate to contact us.

    Best regards

  4. 20% of what? retail? Your cut after Apple?
Unless it’s retail, 20% doesn’t sound like that much. And even then, it’s a little thin.

    But good luck!

  5. Hi Jeff,
I really enjoyed Bone and Shazam, and I was wondering if this comic would be suitable for me to read. I’m 14, do you think it would be a cool comic for me?

  6. Bianca,
14 might be a little young. Rasl isn’t all that bad. It’s a sci-fi, hard-boiled adventure. Nothing worse than what’s on HBO, or even a lot of regular TV, but still there are some swear words and a lot of the themes and situations are adult. I think a junior or senior in high school might be able to handle it.

  7. Seriously Thanks so much for Rasl. Its definitely a fun and intriguing coming that keeps you wanting the next issue. Im also extremely happy to see man Tesla back in the limelight. He definitely deserves to be more prominent as one of our greats. So I was wondering, when using Tesla’s image and likeness etc. Did you have to obtain any type of permission from his foundation or anything of that sort? Im assuming theres a limitation to that. The reason I ask is I myself have been working on a story to web cartoon that involves the scientist a great deal. and was curious what hurdles, if any you had to go through ,

I cannot wait for the next issue.

PS heres a an image of my Tesla with his ‘Robot’
