National Book Festival Follow-up
The annual National Book Festival took place last weekend in Washington, DC, where Jeff Smith was an invited guest at the first ever Graphic Novel Night Super Session. The inclusion of Graphic Novels was a smashing success with very long lines for Jeff’s signing and a jam-packed house for his presentation, which stretched late into the evening.
It was a great weekend for Graphic Novels, beginning with BONE being featured on the back page of the Washington Post’s ‘Book World’ supplement. [View the comic]

Follow Friday: Gene Luen Yang
Gene Yang is the graphic novelist behind the critically acclaimed Boxers and Saints as well as American Born Chinese, the latter of which was the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award and the first to win the American Library Association’s Printz Award!

My inspiration for Rasl
Science fiction and noir. RASL came out of my love for these genres. Some of my favorite authors are Arthur C. Clarke, Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. I also watch a lot of noir film classics like The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep. – Jeff Smith
Rocket Raccoon Sketches
Jeff Smith was invited by Marvel to participate in the re-launch of Guardians of the Galaxy’s“ Rocket Raccoon” story. He did a variant cover that was sold exclusively at Comic-Con International in San Diego this past July.

National Book Festival Reminder
As a reminder, the 2014 Library of Congress National Book Festival is next Saturday, August 30 at the Washington Convention Center. The event is free and open to the public, and will run from 10:00am to 10:00pm.
Jeff was invited to give a presentation at the Festivals’ first ‘Graphic Novel Night. We hope you can drop during these times!

Bao Publishing is our Italian publisher for Bone and Rasl. They recently held their first pop up store – Bao Boutique Brera – for a very fun and successful three week run. The goal of the experience was to show how comics can be in the everyday lives of normal people, more than they have been so far! Bao continues to push the envelope with their stylish and innovative ideas!

Dan Clowes is the multiple Eisner and Harvey-award winning graphic novelist of such delightfully entertaining stories like Ghost World and Eightball.
An exhibition of his work was recently unveiled at The Ohio State University’s Wexner Center for the Arts titled “Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes.” He also curated an exhibition titled ‘Eye of the Cartoonist: Daniel Clowes’Selections from Comics History’, which is coincidentally being held at The Ohio State University’s Billy Ireland Museum.

Do you live near Washington, DC? The Library of Congress National Book Festival, known for celebrating the literary contributions of authors,illustrators and poets, will take place at the Walter E.Washington Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.. This event will also be hosting its first Graphic Novel Night!
Jeff Smith will be signing books, which will be followed by a reading presentation.

Up Next: Boston Comic Con!
Our first tour stop for August takes us to the great city of Boston! This is Jeff’s first time attending Boston Comic Con, and it is also a first for Cartoon Books! We couldn’t be more excited to meet our Bostonian fans and also tour the city. As we get closer to the show, we’ll be posting our location on the show floor, as well as where you can find Jeff during panels and signings. Mike Mignola is the author and illustrator of the immensely popular ‘Hellboy’ comics as well as two successful box-office movies of that series! Mike and Jeff Smith came up together in the heyday of the 90’s comics scene. Mike really came into his own with the jump to Dark Horse Comics in 1993. At the same time, Jeff established Cartoon Books as the self-publishing house for his works. Mike continues to tour the convention circuit and assures us more ‘Hellboy’ is on the way!

Not only did we have an incredibly fun and successful visit to Heroes Con, but we were gifted this super fun sketch of Jeff. The artist is our friend Chris Schweizer! The other piece is from Rybo, who unfortunately didn’t get to meet Jeff in person but is getting introduced here!

Fan Art – Little Mouse Story Hat
We have the BEST fans! And because we do, they send us some of the BEST fan mail! We received an email from a fan who not only loves the BONE story, but LITTLE MOUSE too. For ‘show and tell’ at her school, Tressley made this unbelievably awesome hat which ‘tells’ the story of Little Mouse! She wore it while she read the story in front of her 1st grade class.
