Last
weekend at CXC-Comics Crossroads was a blast. Here’s a picture of Jeff
Smith and myself after one of my presentations. He and his wife Vijaya
are largely responsible for establishing the entire amazing event.

CXC 2018 is a wrap – and ended with a bang! Jeff was given a Master Cartoonist award as well as a City Council Resolution of Expression, celebrating his contributions to the CXC Festival in its 4 year run. We are very honored by the surprise!

CXC 2018 Special Guest Jim Woodring is a giant of 20th and 21st Century
comics art. He is best known for his beautiful,
psychologically-insightful comics starring his everyman character Frank.
Woodring joins CXC Executive Director Tom Spurgeon in a discussion of
his latest, Poochytown, and his remarkable and inspiring story of
becoming one of the world’s great cartoonists.

An Artist At Work: Charles Vess
Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum (Will Eisner Seminar Room)
CXC 2018 Special Guest Charles Vess is equally skilled as a
comics-maker and as an illustrator, with a special emphasis on fantasy.
The powerful artist has agree to sit down and do a focused program on
how he’s made art over the entirety of his career, with the idea that
this will be included in the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum
archives in perpetuity.
This is a
once-in-a-lifetime chance for fans of beautiful visual art, and Vess
himself could not be more cherished by his peers and readers.
Guiding the conversation will be CXC Executive Director Tom Spurgeon.
Full title: “Radical Praxis In
Comics: Comics Practices As A Way Of Life And Community,” Ronald Wimberly
and a hand-selected group of artists from communities in Oakland and Columbus
will talk the intersection of comics and life.
In Wimberly’s words: ““How are comics the aesthetic product of a healthy
community? Can comics produce healthy community? How do artists differentiate
between comics as occupation and existential practice, and how can comics be a
part of a meaningful life?”
Stepping into the programming spotlight at CXC 2018 is our great
favorite, the superstar Katie Skelly, on this year’s release of The
Agency! This time out, it’s writer Matt Fraction tossing her questions!
Come
see two of comics’ brightest, funniest and most articulate makers in
beautiful room 3A at CML’s Main Library (96 S Grant)! This is going to
be one amazing conversation!

Friday 7:30pm, free but ticketed event: Cartoonist Lynn Johnston discusses her nearly 30-year run with For Better or For Worse (1979–2008)—one of the most beloved comic strips in North America—at this talk that also features live drawing by Johnston as well as an interview by special guest Jessica Campbell. Johnston made history in 1993 by creating one of the first openly gay characters in a strip, and her unique approach to aging her characters in “real time” made the comic deeply relatable to its readers. A Canadian-born artist and humorist, Campbell works in comics, fiber, painting, drawing, and performance and teaches comics and comics history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and DePaul University. A book signing with Johnston follows in the Wexner Center Store.
Thursday at 7pm: CXC is proud to present through its partnering institution the Wexner Center for the Arts the animation legend Sally Cruikshank.
Cruikshank will be here to show off some of her incredibly memorable cartoon work, including the 1975 short “Quasi at the Quackadero,” a film honored by preservation in the US National Film Registry.
A Q&A with Wexner Center Director of Film/Video Dave Filipi follows the program.
Billy Ireland and World War I, presented by Lucy Caswell tonight at 7pm at the Columbus Metropolitan Library!
Billy Ireland, the cartoonist for the Columbus Dispatch from 1898 until his death in 1935, had a weekly illustrated Sunday commentary page titled “The Passing Show,” which both reflected and influenced public opinion in our community. Lucy Shelton Caswell, Ireland’s biographer and founding curator of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, will show examples of “The Passing Show” from 1914-18 that document life in Columbus during World War I. The event, which is being co-sponsored by Cartoon Crossroads Columbus, will be held at the auditorium of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, 96 South Grant Avenue.
Join us for a special presentation of the live-action/animated
sports comedy Space Jam, followed by a panel discussion with some of the
members of the animation team that brought the film to life.
Members
of former, Columbus-based animation studio, Character Builders, will be
in attendance for a panel discussion following the film.
Panelists include:
Dan Root, Animator and Storyboard Artist on the film
Ron Price, Scene Planner and Animatics Editor on the film
Jim Kammerud, Story Artist and Supervising Animator on the film, and co-founder of Character Builders
Moderated by Rafael Rosado (Pinky & the Brain, Venture Brothers, Curious George)
Cocktail hour at 7pm, with screening at 8pm. Panel discussion will follow.
This
screening is in partnership with Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC), a
four day festival, September 27-30, celebrating connections between
people with a passion for the art of cartoons. Ticket proceeds will be
donated to CXC.
CXC Special Guest Kazu Kibuishi will be joining our fabulous lineup of talent for 2018. Jeff will be in moderating Kazu’s panel as they talk about the debut of Amulet Volume 8 and all things comics!
