BONE Volume Two: The Great Cow Race
A
tribute to Michael Peters, from his loving family, as celebrated in
Comic-Con International’s 50th Anniversary Souvenir Book. Included is a
collage of photos of Michael visiting Jeff at Con over the years. We
thank the Peters family for sharing Michael’s journey with us, and for
allowing us to share it with you!
San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) is
about relationships, experiences, memories. Michael Peters discovered
this in 2009 at age 13 attending his first SDCC, and he was hooked.
Michael’s love of comics, superhero movies, and graphic novels grew as
he met the greats at SDCC – Joss Whedon, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Gail
Simone. Perhaps Michael’s greatest relationship was formed year after
year as he stopped to talk with Jeff Smith about one of his favorites:
Bone.
Michael’s passion for writing was fueled as he visited with
these amazing talents, as well as walking through artist’s alley,
sleeping on the lawn of Hall H to secure a place in the Saturday panels
and attending the late-night showings of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.
These incredible inspirations led Michael to travel far from his home
in Nebraska to college in L.A. to study screenwriting at LMU.
As
in many of our hero’s stories, the protagonist encountered an incredible
challenge, and Michael’s was his health. At the age of 8 months,
through the generosity of an organ donor, Michael received a heart
transplant. For nearly 20 years, Michael lived a healthy life, but
ultimately his kidneys began to fail. During SDCC 2016, Michael did
lunchtime dialysis exchanges in his car in the parking garage beneath
the convention center, to not miss any panels. Unfortunately, in January
2017 at the age of 20, Michael passed away awaiting a double organ
transplant. Michael’s was a life lived fully, one greatly enriched by
the relationships, experiences and memories of SDCC.
