Banned Books Week

It’s Banned Books Week! The annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas. BONE has often made the list for three reasons: violence, racism and political viewpoint.

Co Director Brenda Chapman, the first woman to direct an animated feature for a Hollywood studio, visits to discuss the production of that landmark film.
The Prince of Egypt was the first production created by DreamWorks Animation (Antz was the first film to be released), carving out a place in film history for both Chapman and the studio. The film became an instant critical and box office success upon its release in 1998, and its reputation only continues to grow to this day.
An animated retelling of the life of the prophet Moses from the book of Exodus from the Old Testament, The Prince of Egypt features an astonishing cast of voice actors including Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Patrick Stewart, Danny Glover, Jeff Goldblum, Steve Martin, and Val Kilmer as Moses. Chapman also codirected the Oscar-winner Brave (2012) for Pixar. (99 mins., 35mm).

Thursday September 28th 4pm-5pm
Wexner Center for the Arts
Get a behind-the-scenes look at the history of animation at NBCUniversal—including the DreamWorks catalogue—from archivist Chase Schulte.
DreamWorks Animation has produced some of the most memorable and beloved animated films of the past 25 years. In this presentation, Chase Schulte, Ohio State alum and manager of Physical Archive Operations at NBCUniversal—which acquired DreamWorks Animation in 2016—discusses the history of the studio and some of its most popular films, as well as some examples of past animated films released by Universal. TBT Pogofest!

It’s no secret that Pogo is one of Jeff’s favorite comics of all time. So imagine his surprise and delight at being invited to receive a ‘star’ on the Pogofest Walk of Fame in 1997. Pogofest is an (almost) annual festival dedicated to celebrating all things ‘Pogo’ and Walt Kelly located in the swamps of Waycross, Georgia!

9/11

September 11, 2001, Jeff and Vijaya had just arrived in Norway for a comics festival in Bergen. Illustrating the experience of what it was like to be far from home that day, these original art pieces were donated to the “9-11: Emergency Relief” graphic novel which was a fundraiser for the American Red Cross.

#TBT Wexner Center Mural

In 2008, The Wexner Center for the Arts (located at The Ohio State University), hosted the: Jeff Smith Bone and Beyond gallery exhibit, which featured Jeff’s original art from Bone, Rasl and his Shazam miniseries. Also on display were original pages from some of Jeff’s heroes such as E.C. Segar’s Popeye, Carl Barks’ Uncle Scrooge, Charles Schulz’s Peanuts and more. Perhaps the most jaw-dropping part of the exhibit was the floor-to-ceiling panel installation taken from a scene in the Bone series.
